 MODEL V&V

# Model verification & validation

Souxmar provides verification and validation (V&V) services for engineering simulation models. Verification checks whether a model is implemented according to its specification; validation evaluates whether it represents the real system adequately for its intended use. We develop repeatable checks, data comparisons and reports for aviation, marine and rail applications.

For engineering teams developing a new model, reviewing an existing simulation, integrating control software or preparing evidence for a customer acceptance process.

## Define intended use and acceptance criteria

We identify the engineering decision the model supports, its system boundary and operating envelope. Available requirements, reference datasets, comparison metrics and acceptance criteria define the V&V plan. Evidence is assessed in relation to that purpose; a model suitable for one application may need further work for another.

## Model implementation verification

Verification covers equations, units, coordinate frames, signal interfaces, initial conditions and numerical behavior against the model specification. Test cases can include limiting cases, conservation checks where applicable and regression comparisons. Findings connect observed behavior to the requirement or assumption being checked.

## Validation against reference data

We align simulation outputs with suitable measurements or agreed reference data using documented inputs, units, sampling and operating conditions. Comparisons assess defined response characteristics and error measures. Calibration is distinguished from validation, and separate comparison cases are used where the available data allow. Gaps in reference data and limits on supported model use are reported.

## Repeatable tests and traceable reporting

Automated test harnesses support repeatable model runs, parameter variations and result comparisons. Model-in-the-loop (MIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL) or hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) activities are selected for the implementation being tested; the test setup alone does not establish model validity. Deliverables record model versions, inputs, acceptance criteria, results and unresolved issues.

## Starting your project

Provide the model, its intended use, requirements, implementation environment, parameter sets and available reference data. Include measurement conditions, signal definitions, sampling rates and known uncertainty. We agree on test coverage, comparison metrics and the reporting format before starting.

## What you receive

- V&V plan with intended use and acceptance criteria
- Repeatable verification cases and test harnesses
- Reference-data comparisons and validation results
- Sensitivity-study results where required
- Traceable findings, evidence gaps and technical recommendations

Deliverables, source-code handover, hardware scope and acceptance criteria are defined in the project agreement.

## Project questions

### What is the difference between verification and validation?

Verification asks whether the model was implemented according to its specification. Validation asks whether it represents the real system adequately for the intended use. Passing implementation tests does not by itself establish physical validity.

### Can a model be validated without measured data?

Validation needs suitable evidence for the intended use. Manufacturer data, published benchmarks or independently supported reference models may contribute, depending on the application. If evidence is insufficient, we document the gap and define additional measurements or a narrower supported scope.

### Is model calibration the same as validation?

No. Calibration adjusts parameters to improve agreement with data. Validation evaluates whether the resulting model is suitable for its intended use. Independent comparison cases strengthen that assessment when suitable data are available.

### Is a V&V report a certification?

No. A V&V report documents engineering evidence within an agreed scope. Independent certification and approval for operational or credited training use are separate processes.
